Scope

BREATHE is an innovative domestic demand-side response project funded by BEIS (the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). The project focuses on new build properties (Code 4 Sustainable Homes) with solar PV and dual purpose air source heat pumps located in clusters in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, although older homes can also benefit.

Smart batteries and control systems are installed in the homes which enable the timing of energy demand to be shifted away from peak electricity demand periods. Project lead, Energise Barnsley, is the largest local authority and community rooftop solar and battery storage project in the UK. It is supported by project partners PassivSystems, Oxford Brookes University and Northern Powergrid. The project started in summer 2019 and is due to finish in spring 2022.
